Our teams get some very interesting items to carry…
This story is no different but it does have its own twist. Read on to hear about how events unfolded that lead to a ‘citizen’s arrest’ while our team was on the job. Sounds bizarre you say? …we agree!
The job in itself was a little interesting. Transporting a self-propelled submarine weighing 700kg from Auckland to a holiday home in Queenstown for a well known NZ business icon. You could say, not your average moving and delivery job.
The move was coordinated by Smart Express’ Senior Sales Consultant Kyle Ahmu. Kyle has bucket loads of experience in the transport removal industry. Over the last 15 years, he’s done just about every role possible, including being an Owner Driver.
With his extensive background, we should not have been too surprised when he personally made the wooden framework necessary to support the 700kg submarine on its 1500km journey south.
You can see from the photo below of Kyle with his precious cargo, with The Remarkables mountains in the background, that the special cargo was successfully delivered.
It’s on the trip home where fun was about to start.
To manage driving hours, Kyle had taken over the wheel from our main driver Peter, who had driven the truck on the journey south.
Heading north back on their way to the ferry, they were stopped by a police roadblock that was put in place to stop a car and trailer complete with a stolen generator, taken earlier from a building site further south.
Somehow the thieves had managed to avoid the roadblock and continued their escape north.
With knowledge of the ensuing theft, it was the quick thinking of two truck drivers, one of which was our superhero Kyle, who helped pin the stolen vehicle following an evasive overtaking manoeuvre.

Due to our great branding on our Smart Express removals trucks, Business Director Susan Spelman later took a phone call from Kaikoura Traffic Management thanking Kyle for his quick thinking in blocking in the car, along with the stolen generator when the opportunity presented itself.
Now that’s a great work story you’d be proud to tell anytime.
