Do you know the origins of Queen’s Birthday and why we celebrate it when we do?
Queen Elizabeth ll was actually born on 21 April in 1926.
The day that we publicly celebrate her birthday is part of a tradition which started more than 250 years ago by King George II. Since then, the date of the King or Queen’s birthday has been determined throughout the British Empire.
Early British monarchs simply did not want national celebrations for their birthdays spoiled by the freezing cold. So, official birthday celebrations were simply moved to the early northern summer.
For many Kiwis, the Queen’s Birthday represents the last long weekend before we all batten down the hatches for winter. So there you have it! If you’re ever on a game show and you’re asked a question about the origins of Queen’s Birthday, we hope you say a quiet thank you to Smart Express!
